How to Let Go of Negative Emotions

The first step of letting go of your emotions is by identifying your emotion. Are you angry, hurt, anxious, or afraid? It’s natural to feel angry or afraid of people and situations but you can control how you react to them.

More often than not, we bottle up our anger and hurt and it accumulates over time.  Here are some steps you can take to let go of the negative energy and usher in space for the good one.

Reason it Out

Try to find a reason for your emotion. Ask yourself:

Can you do something about how someone has reacted? Can you control it? If you can, then take steps. If you cannot, then why let it control you?

If you feel particularly angry at a person, or a situation, understand that, anger is an emotion that rises from the most primitive part of the brain. When you get angry it is a fight or a flight situation. When you don’t have to fight and flight in the situation, this anger sets in and causes you to take action.

If you bottle up your anger it can make you bitter over time. It ruins your mental health and takes a toll on your loved ones too. Like anger, emotional pain can cripple us from inside, so we have to learn to let it go.

Feel the Negative Emotions and be Gentle with Yourself

If you are feeling a wave of emotions, feel it out. Don’t hide from your emotions. Face your fears little by little, accept your emotions, and reframe them. You can let your emotions flow or talk to a friend about them. Dealing with painful things is difficult. This is why talking about the situation with a loved one can lessen the weight of it.

Keep this in the back of your mind.

Make the Choice to Let Go

You should know that your negative emotions are hindering your development. Develop self-awareness and understand that letting go is a choice and you can do it.

Remember this trick.

Make a Decision to Forgive

If you choose to forgive the person, it doesn't mean you agree with their actions. It means you want to let go of the negative emotions that are building in you and you don't want to be tied down by them. You can elevate yourself when you don't have to carry the weight of anger and hurt within you. You may keep them at a distance but forgiving them will make you invest less energy in them.

Consider the Trade-off

When you hold negative emotions, it will affect your life negatively. When you consider letting go of the resentment you can live your life in a free manner. You can really live without letting your negative emotions control you.

Self Care

Take care of yourself and focus on your work. Go out with your friends or give yourself some space. Don’t lock yourself in the prison of the past. Understand that you have to move on. It takes time and effort but you cannot let people invade your mind and the quality of your life if it hurts you.

Control Your Own Reaction

Count up to 10 before you react in a manner that hurts you or other people. You will find yourself analyzing the situation better. Understand your feelings and ask yourself if the person who had an outburst was genuinely feeling the things that they said? Or was it just said in the heat of the moment?

Immerse Yourself in an Activity

Read a book, paint, knit! If you cannot concentrate, engage in a group activity. Go play a game or express your creativity through it. Spend your time doing something that lights you up and anticipate meaningful experiences.

Bringing It All Together

Follow these tips to let go of negative emotions. Develop a new perspective, accept your emotions, and make small changes to see improvement in your health and mind. Remember, being angry will also affect your health negatively in addition to your overall mindset.

You have two choices - evolve or repeat.
